Question types

We include all of the seven different question types on the TOEFL listening test:

  1. Identifying the main idea – identify the main idea from an academic lecture.
  2. Comprehension of specific details – comprehension of certain excerpts of the conversation or lecture .
  3. Making an inference – draw a conclusion based the information stated in the recording.
  4. Understanding implications – decide what is implied by the information stated in the recording.
  5. Summarizing key points – choose the best group of statements that summarizes the most important points.
  6. Understanding idioms – idioms are expressions that do not have a literal meaning. There are many of these on the listening exam.
  7. Analysing rhetorical function – decide why a speaker used a certain phrase or how a speaker has supported his or her argument.
